RESUMO

This study shows the results of the analysis of the photogrammetric use of 360-degree cameras in complex heritage-related scenes. The goal is to take advantage of the large field of view provided by these sensors and reduce the number of images used to cover the entire scene compared to those needed using conventional cameras. We also try to minimize problems derived from camera geometry and lens characteristics. In this regard, we used a multi-sensor camera composed of six fisheye lenses, applying photogrammetric procedures to several funerary structures. The methodology includes the analysis of several types of spherical images obtained using different stitching techniques and the comparison of the results of image orientation processes considering these images and the original fisheye images. Subsequently, we analyze the possible use of the fisheye images to model complex scenes by reducing the use of ground control points, thus minimizing the need to apply surveying techniques to determine their coordinates. In this regard, we applied distance constraints based on a previous extrinsic calibration of the camera, obtaining results similar to those obtained using a traditional schema based on points. The results have allowed us to determine the advantages and disadvantages of each type of image and configuration, providing several recommendations regarding their use in complex scenes.

In recent years, extensive research efforts have been dedicated to the investigation of CdSe/CdS-based quantum-confined nanostructures, driven by their distinctive properties. The morphologies of these nanostructures have been shown to directly affect their properties, an area which has proven to be an important field of study. Herein, we report a new morphology of CdSe/CdS core-shell heterostructures in the form of a 'nanonail' - a modified nanorod-like morphology, in which a distinctive triangular head can be observed at one end of the structure. In-depth studies of this morphology reveal a material with tuneable rod length and width, as well as exceptional photoluminescent properties. Following this, we have demonstrated the ability to induce chiroptical activity via ligand exchange, revealing the important role of the specific morphology, shell thickness and chiral ligand concentration in the effect of ligand induced chirality. In addition, the cellular uptake and cytotoxicity of obtained chiral nanostructures were evaluated on human lung-derived A549 cancer cells, revealing a significant enantioselectivity in biological activity. Finally, analysis on monolayers of the material demonstrate the complete absence of FRET processes. Overall, this CdSe/CdS heterostructure is another tuneable morphology of a very important nanomaterial, one which shows great advantages and a range of potential applications.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of cervical cancer treatment on the quality of life of long-term survivors compared with the general female population is controversial, and no studies have been conducted comparing patients with benign gynecological diseases. The aim of this study was to compare the quality of life of cervical cancer survivors with that of healthy controls. STUDY DESIGN: A case-control study was conducted to compare the quality of life of 106 cervical cancer survivors from a tertiary hospital and 185 women admitted to a gynecological outpatient clinic from the same health area for a healthy woman check-up (n 46) or for a benign gynecological disorder (symptomatic, n 113; asymptomatic, n 26). To measure quality of life, self-administered questionnaires, such as the Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy-cervix and World Health Organization quality of life-brief version, were employed. Baseline scores were collected when patients first reported, and further evaluations were completed at 0-6, 7-12, 13-24, 25-60, and more than 60 months. For the contrastive analysis hypothesis, we employed R statistical software. RESULTS: Except for the environment domain at 0-6, 7-12, and 13-24 months (51.52 vs. 60.73, p < 0.0001; 52 vs. 60.73, p < 0.0001; 49.81 vs. 60.73, p < 0.0001, respectively), we found no statistically significant differences in the quality of life between cervical cancer survivors and controls. We did find differences in the physical health domain scores at 0-6 months (60.22 vs. 72.42, p = 0.039) and the social relationships domain scores at 13-24 months (54 vs. 71.42, p = 0.017) between cases and asymptomatic controls. CONCLUSION: Except for physical well-being, environment and social relationships, which were substantially better for controls, especially in the asymptomatic, long-term cervical cancer survivorsquality of life did not vary from that of controls.

Airway smooth muscle (ASM) contraction is determined by the increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) caused by its release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) or by extracellular Ca2+ influx. Major channels involved in Ca2+ influx in ASM cells are L-type voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels (L-VDCCs) and nonselective cation channels (NSCCs). Transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4) is an NSCC recently studied in ASM. Mechanical stimuli, such as contraction, can activate TRPV4. We investigated the possible activation of TRPV4 by histamine (His)- or carbachol (CCh)-induced contraction in guinea pig ASM. In single myocytes, the TRPV4 agonist (GSK101) evoked an increase in [Ca2+]i, characterized by a slow onset and a plateau phase. The TRPV4 antagonist (GSK219) decreased channel activity by 94%, whereas the Ca2+-free medium abolished the Ca2+ response induced by GSK101. Moreover, GSK101 caused Na+ influx in tracheal myocytes. GSK219 reduced the Ca2+ peak and the Ca2+ plateau triggered by His or CCh. TRPV4 blockade shifted the concentration-response curve relating to His and CCh to the right in tracheal rings and reduced the maximal contraction. Finally, the activation of TRPV4 in single myocytes increased the Ca2+ refilling of the SR. We conclude that contraction of ASM cells after stimulation with His or CCh promotes TRPV4 activation, the subsequent influx of Ca2+ and Na+, and the opening of L-VDCCs. The entry of Ca2+ into ASM cells via TRPV4 and L-VDCCs contributes to optimal smooth muscle contraction.

Following an Argentine Hemorrhagic Fever (AHF) outbreak in the early 1990s, a rodent survey for Junín virus, a New World Clade B arenavirus, in endemic areas of Argentina was conducted. Since 1990, INEVH has been developing eco-epidemiological surveillance of rodents, inside and outside the Argentine Hemorrhagic Fever endemic area. Samples from rodents captured between 1993 and 2019 that were positive for Arenavirus infection underwent Sanger and unbiased, Illumina-based high-throughput sequencing, which yielded 5 complete and 88 partial Mammarenaviruses genomes. Previously, 11 genomes representing four species of New World arenavirus Clade C existed in public records. This work has generated 13 novel genomes, expanding the New World arenavirus Clade C to 24 total genomes. Additionally, two genomes exhibit sufficient genetic diversity to be considered a new species, as per ICTV guidelines (proposed name Mammarenavirus vellosense). The 13 novel genomes exhibited reassortment between the small and large segments in New World Mammarenaviruses. This work demonstrates that Clade C Mammarenavirus infections circulate broadly among Necromys species in the Argentine Hemorrhagic Fever endemic area; however, the risk for Clade C Mammarenavirus human infection is currently unknown.

This study investigates the impact of SCs consumption by assessing the effects of three novel synthetic cannabinoids (SCs); MDMB-CHMINACA, 5F-ADB-PINACA, and APICA post-drug treatment. SCs are known for their rapid onset (<1 min) and prolonged duration (≥5 h). Therefore, this research aimed to assess behavioral responses and their correlation with endocannabinoids (ECs) accumulation in the hippocampus, and EC's metabolic enzymes alteration at different timeframes (1-3-5-h) following drug administration. Different extents of locomotive disruption and sustained anxiety-like symptoms were observed throughout all-encompassing timeframes of drug administration. Notably, MDMB-CHMINACA induced significant memory impairment at 1 and 3 h. Elevated levels of anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG) were detected 1 h post-MDMB-CHMINACA and 5F-ADB-PINACA administration. Reduced mRNA expression levels of fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) (AEA and 2-AG degrading enzymes, respectively), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) occurred at 1 h, with FAAH levels remaining reduced at 3 h. These findings suggest a connection between increased EC content and decreased BDNF expression following SC exposure. Cognitive disruption, particularly motor coordination decline and progressive loss manifested in a time-dependent manner across all the analyzed SCs. Our study highlights the importance of adopting a temporal framework when assessing the effects of SCs.

INTRODUCTION: The dialysis disequilibrium syndrome (DDS) is a complication in those undergoing dialysis for chronic kidney disease (CKD) or acute kidney injury (AKI), characterized by nonspecific symptoms that may progress to coma and death secondary to cerebral edema. This syndrome is associated with rapid change in electrolytes during dialysis with changes in intracranial pressure (ICP) and may have a higher incidence in the elderly neurosurgical patient population. METHODS: Literature review and illustrative case example. RESULTS: A 62-year-old female presented with acute mental status change during hemodialysis (HD), with a history of a nonsurgical acute subdural hematoma (SDH) 10 days prior. Imaging showed a conversion of the acute SDH to chronic SDH of 12.2 mm in size with a 14.1 midline shift, for which she underwent a hemicraniectomy with SDH evacuation, with a gradual return to baseline. The literature review identified 5 publications meeting the inclusion criteria. Major theories of DDS include a reverse urea effect, intracerebral acidosis, idiogenic osmoles, and local inflammation. This complication may occur more frequently in the elderly neurosurgical patient population, likely due to age-related comorbidities, preexisting neurological insult, and increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), leading to cerebral edema. CONCLUSION: DDS is a rare and potentially fatal complication of HD that may have a higher incidence in the elderly neurosurgical patient population, yet remains to be fully understood. Further study is recommended to characterize the pathophysiological mechanism and incidence of DDS in neurosurgical patients.

PURPOSE: To compare the visual, refractive, and topographic outcomes of a high irradiance accelerated corneal crosslinking (ACXL) protocol after a 12-month follow-up between pediatric and adult patients with progressive keratoconus (KC). METHODS: Retrospective, comparative, cohort study. Patients with KC were divided into two groups: pediatric (≤ 18 years) and adult (> 18 years). All of them were managed with epi-OFF ACXL (30 mW/cm2, 8 min, pulsed 1:1 on and off = 7.2 J/cm2). Visual, refractive, and topographic values were measured preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperative. KC progression, defined as a Kmax increase of ≥ 1D during follow-up, was recorded. RESULTS: Eighty-nine eyes (53 patients) were included for analysis; 45 (50.6%) eyes were from pediatric patients and 44 (49.4%) from adults. At one-year follow-up, pediatric patients experienced significantly higher rates of progression (22.2% vs. 4.5%, p = .014). Contrariwise, female gender (Beta = - 3.62, p = .018), a baseline uncorrected visual acuity of Snellen ≥ 20/60 (Beta = - 5.96, p = .007), and being ≥ 15 years at ACXL treatment (Beta = - 0.31, p = .021) were associated with non-progressive disease. A significant improvement in best-corrected visual acuity, Kmin, Km, and Kmax was recorded in both groups. Overall, 86.5% of eyes from both groups showed Kmax stabilization or improvement. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the similarity in visual, refractive, and topographic outcomes in both groups, younger age was associated with KC progression after ACXL at one year of follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: There is discussion about the frequency of STI screening among pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users. The aim of this study was to analyse the incidence of STIs and to evaluate different screening models in order to optimise the follow-up. METHODOLOGY: A prospective study was conducted between 2017 and 2023, including 138 PrEP users in a STI clinic. Participants were tested for STIs every three months. Unscheduled visits were performed for those with STI-related symptoms or for people who were notified for an STI by a sexual partner. We performed a survival analysis of repeated events, estimating the cumulative incidence (CI) and incidence rate (IR). RESULTS: The overall CI by quarterly screening was 8.3 (95% CI: 7.6-9.1) infections per person over six years, with a decreasing trend. The most frequently diagnosed pathogen was Neisseria gonorrhoeae, with a IR of 0.76 (95% CI: 0.68-0.84). If the frequency of screening is reduced to every six months, the IR of STIs is reduced by (95% CI: 0.5-0.66) infections per user per year, and at 12 months by 0.82 (95% CI: 0.73-0.89). In the case of no pharyngeal or urethral screening, IR is reduced by 0.37 (95% CI: 0.32-0.42) infections per person per year and in those over 35 years of age by 0.33 (95% CI: 0.25-0.4). Eliminating unscheduled visits, the reduction in IR is 0.33 (95% CI: 0.24-0.42). CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of STIs among PrEP users is high, especially in the rectum, but it does not increase over time. STI screening could be optimised reducing the frequency of pharyngeal and urethral testing, particularly in those over 35 years of age. It is essential to redistribute health resources for unscheduled visits, which have been shown to be the most cost-effective screening.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the association between LASIK and early cataract phacoemulsification surgery (PE). METHODS: A matched case-control study was conducted. Cases were otherwise healthy adults with a history of LASIK. Groups were paired according to corrected-distance visual acuity (CDVA), axial length, and cataract grade. RESULTS: A total of 213 patients were included. 85 patients were classified as post-LASIK group and 128 as controls. The mean age at the time of LASIK was 42.32 ± 9.24 years. The mean CDVA before PE was 0.29 ± 0.19 Log MAR in post-LASIK group and 0.34 ± 0.22 Log MAR in controls (p = 0.07). The mean axial length was 23.99 ± 1.78 mm in post-LASIK group and 23.62 ± 0.98 mm in controls (p = 0.085). The mean nuclear cataract grading was 1.36 in post-LASIK group and 1.47 in controls (p = 0.34). The mean age at the time of PE was 60.18 ± 7.46 years in post-LASIK group and 67.35 ± 9.28 in controls (p < 0.0005). The difference between the mean age of LASIK and the mean age of PE was 17.85 ± 5.72 years. There was a positive association between the post-LASIK group and the age of PE ≤ 55 years (OR: 4.917, 95% CI: 2.21-10.90, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: LASIK may be associated with early PE. Patients with LASIK had a 7-year earlier PE compared to a matched control group.

RESUMO

In recent years, ultrasound has demonstrated its usefulness in the approach to vascular structures and other tissues such as the orbit, facilitating the early diagnosis of various diseases without having to rely on other more invasive or less available tests. In Vogt Koyanagi Harada syndrome, characterised by bilateral acute uveitis, ocular ultrasound is a clear example of the usefulness of ultrasonography in early diagnosis, facilitating the initiation of specific treatment to change the ominous natural history of this disease. This case shows the usefulness of the echography to make the differential diagnosis with other diseases that clinical onset could be similar than VKH, but with a different diagnostic and therapeutic approach.

BACKGROUND: Inherited retinal dystrophies are hereditary diseases which have in common the progressive degeneration of photoreceptors. They are a group of diseases with clinical, genetic, and allelic heterogeneity. There is limited information regarding the genetic landscape of inherited retinal diseases in Mexico, therefore, the present study was conducted in the northeast region of the country. METHODS: Patients with inherited retinal dystrophies were included. A complete history, full ophthalmological and medical genetics evaluations, and genetic analysis through a targeted NGS panel for inherited retinal dystrophies comprising at least 293 genes were undertaken. RESULTS: A total of 126 patients were included. Cases were solved in 74.6% of the study's population. Retinitis pigmentosa accounted for the most found inherited retinal disease. Ninety-nine causal variants were found, being USH2A and ABCA4 the most affected genes (26 and 15 cases, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The present study documents the most prevalent causative genes in IRDs, as USH2A, in northeastern Mexico. This contrasts with previous reports of IRDs in other zones of the country. Further studies, targeting previously unstudied populations in Mexico are important to document the genetic background of inherited retinal dystrophies in the country.

PURPOSE: The present review will summarize FECD-associated genes and pathophysiology, diagnosis, current  therapeutic approaches, and future treatment perspectives. METHODS: Literature review. RESULTS: Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) is the most common bilateral corneal dystrophy and accounts for one-third of all corneal transplants performed in the US. FECD is caused by a combination of genetic and non-heritable factors, and there are two types: early-onset FECD, which affects individuals from an early age and is usually more severe, and late-onset FECD, which is more common and typically manifests around the age of 40. The hallmark findings of FECD include progressive loss of corneal endothelial cells and the formation of focal excrescences (guttae) on the Descemet membrane. These pathophysiological changes result in progressive endothelial dysfunction, leading to a decrease in visual acuity and blindness in later stages. The present review will summarize FECD-associated genes and pathophysiology, diagnosis, current therapeutic approaches, and future treatment perspectives. CONCLUSION: With the characterization and understanding of FECD-related genes and ongoing research into regenerative therapies for corneal endothelium, we can hope to see more significant improvements in the future in the management and care of the disease.

The aim of this work was to assess the tolerability, safety, and efficacy of an ophthalmic topical formulation containing helenalin from Arnica montana and hyaluronic acid 0.4% (HA) in patients with mild-to-moderate Dry Eye Disease (DED) exhibiting positive Matrix Metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) test results. Tolerability and safety were evaluated in 24 healthy subjects. Participants were instructed to apply one drop of the formulation three times a day in the study eye, for 2 weeks, followed by a clinical follow-up of 21 days. Efficacy was studied in 48 DED patients randomized into Study (Group 1/receiving the studied formulation) or Control (Group 2/Receiving HA 0.4% eye lubricant) groups for 1 month. Assessments included an MMP-9 positivity test, conjunctival impression cytology (CIC), Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), non-invasive film tear breakup time (NIBUT), non-invasive average breakup time (NIAvg-BUT), ocular surface staining, Schirmer's test, and meibomiography. A crossover design with an additional 1-month follow-up was applied to both groups. Healthy subjects receiving the studied formulation exhibited good tolerability and no adverse events. Regarding the efficacy study, Group 1 exhibited a statistically significant reduction in the MMP-9 positivity rate compared to Group 2 (p < 0.001). Both Group 1 and Group 2 exhibited substantial improvements in OSDI and NIBUT scores (p < 0.001). However, Group 1 demonstrated a significant improvement in NI-Avg-BUT and Schirmer's test scores (p < 0.001), whereas Group 2 did not (p > 0.05). Finally, after the crossover, the proportion of MMP-9-positive subjects in Group 1 increased from 25% to 91.6%, while Group 2 showed a significant decrease from 87.5% to 20.8%. Overall, the topical formulation containing sesquiterpene helenalin from Arnica montana and hyaluronic acid was well tolerated and exhibited a favorable safety profile. Our formulation reduces DED symptomatology and modulates the ocular surface inflammatory process; this is evidenced by the enhancement of CIC, the improvement of DED-related tear film status, and the reduction of the MMP-9 positivity rate.

INTRODUCTION: Living donor kidney evaluation has substantial time variations with significant intercenter variation. One-day donor evaluation has shown to be clinically efficient and improve transplant rates. However, patients' perception of 1-day evaluation is unknown. We hypothesized that 1 day LKD evaluation will improve patient satisfaction and improve living donation rates. METHODS: All interested LD candidates from April 2018 to May 2020 were enrolled in the study. Non-directed donors, donors greater than 60 years old, and recipients with more than three donors underwent multi-day evaluation (control group) while the rest underwent 1-day evaluation (intervention group). An anonymous survey was filled by both groups to assess their perceptions on different areas including time, communication, experience, information provided, and their preferences on living donor evaluation. RESULTS: Donor candidates in the 1-day evaluation group selected that the time from the questionnaire to clinic evaluation took "under 1 month" or "less than 3 months" (62.5% vs. 15.8%, p = .002), with "excellent" for both scheduling process (65% vs. 31.6%, p = .03) and communication (82.5% vs. 57.9%, p = .09) when compared to candidates in the multiple-days evaluation group. One-day candidates felt "very satisfied" with the overall experience (95% vs. 68.4%, p = .02) and felt "extremely well" with the information provided regarding the living donor process (87.5% vs. 47.4%, p = .003) when compared to multiple-day evaluation group. Regardless of the group, 53 (89.8%) patients preferred 1-day evaluation. CONCLUSION: We demonstrate 1-day living donor evaluation is efficient, patient preferred, and adds value through improved communication, and better overall patient satisfaction.

Extended field-of-view ultrasound (US) imaging, also known as panoramic US, represents a technical advance that allows for complete visualization of large musculoskeletal structures, which are often limited in conventional 2D US images. Currently, there is no evidence examining whether the experience of examiners influences muscle shape deformations that may arise during the glide of the transducer in panoramic US acquisition. As no studies using panoramic US have analyzed whether two examiners with differing levels of experience might obtain varying scores in size, shape, or brightness during the US assessment of the rectus femoris muscle, our aim was to analyze the inter-examiner reliability of panoramic US imaging acquisition in determining muscle size, shape, and brightness between two examiners. Additionally, we sought to investigate whether the examiners' experience plays a significant role in muscle deformations during imaging acquisition by assessing score differences. Shape (circularity, aspect ratio, and roundness), size (cross-sectional area and perimeter), and brightness (mean echo intensity) were analyzed in 39 volunteers. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), standard error of measurements (SEM), minimal detectable changes (MDC), and coefficient of absolute errors (CAE%) were calculated. All parameters evaluated showed no significant differences between the two examiners (p > 0.05). Panoramic US proved to be reliable, regardless of examiner experience, as no deformations were observed. Further research is needed to corroborate the validity of panoramic US by comparing this method with gold standard techniques.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare trichloroacetic acid (TCA) versus electrocautery (ECA) for the treatment of anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL). METHODS: This is an observational, single-center study. All subjects with HIV who had anal HSIL treated with TCA or ECA from 2010 to 2022 were included. Effectiveness was evaluated by on-treatment analysis, defining response as the resolution of HSIL and recurrence as a new diagnosis of HSILs during follow-up. A propensity score analysis was used to adjust for confounding factors. RESULTS: In total, 227 and 260 HSIL episodes were treated with ECA and TCA, respectively. Response was observed in 61.7% (95% CI: 55.3-68) of cases treated with ECA and in 73.1% (95% CI: 67.8-78.5) with TCA (p = .004). The effectiveness of TCA was higher in large and multifocal HSILs. Side effects were common with both treatments, but no serious events were described. Tolerability was good in 77.1% and 80.7% of patients treated with ECA and TCA, respectively. At 24 months, recurrent HSIL were observed in 36.3% (95% CI: 27.3-45) and 28% (95% CI: 20.2-35.8) in the ECA and TCA groups (p = .049). A nadir CD4 cell count ≤200 cells/µl was found to be a risk factor for recurrence (OR: 1.77; 95% CI: 1.12-2.78). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, treatment with TCA showed high effectiveness, low recurrence and good tolerability. Considering the benefits of TCA, it could be considered one of the first-line treatments for anal HSIL.

The Perseverance rover is carrying out an original acoustic experiment on Mars: the SuperCam microphone records the spherical acoustic waves generated by laser sparks at distances from 2 m to more than 8 m. These N-shaped acoustic waves scatter from the multiple local heterogeneities of the turbulent atmosphere. Therefore, large and random fluctuations of sound travel time and intensity develop as the waves cross the medium. The variances of the travel times and the scintillation index (normalized variance of the sound intensity) are studied within the mathematical formalism of the propagation of spherical acoustic waves through thermal turbulence to infer statistical properties of the Mars atmospheric temperature fluctuation field. The comparison with the theory is made by simplifying assumptions that do not include wind fluctuations and diffraction effects. Two Earth years (about one Martian year) of observations acquired during the maximum convective period (10:00-14:00 Mars local time) show a good agreement between the dataset and the formalism: the travel time variance diverges from the linear Chernov solution exactly where the density of occurrence of the first caustic reaches its maximum. Moreover, on average, waves travel faster than the mean speed of sound due to a fast path effect, which is also observed on Earth. To account for the distribution of turbulent eddies, several power spectra are tested and the best match to observation is obtained with a generalized von Karman spectrum with a shallower slope than the Kolmogorov cascade, ϕ(k)∝(1+k2L2)-4/3. It is associated with an outer scale of turbulence, L, of 11 cm at 2 m above the surface and a standard deviation of 6 K over 9 s for the temperature. These near-surface atmospheric properties are consistent with a weak to moderate wave scattering regime around noon with little saturation. Overall, this study presents an innovative and promising methodology to probe the near-surface atmospheric turbulence on Mars.

BACKGROUND: Tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius A. Gray) is one of the five species domesticated from the genus Phaseolus with genetic resistance to biotic and abiotic stress. To understand the mechanisms underlying drought responses in seed storage proteins germinated on water and polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) at -0.49 MPa, we used a proteomics approach to identify potential molecular target proteins associated with the low water potential stress response. METHODS: Storage proteins from cotyledons of Tepary bean seeds germinated at 24, 48 and 72 h on water and PEG-6000 at -0.49 MPa were analyzed by one-dimensional electrophoresis (DE) with 2-DE analysis and shotgun mass spectrometry. Using computational database searching and bioinformatics analyses, we performed Gene Ontology (GO) and protein interactome (functional protein association network) String analyses. RESULTS: Comparative analysis showed that the effect of PEG-6000 on root growth was parallel to that on germination. Based on the SDS‒PAGE protein banding patterns and 2-DE analysis, ten differentially abundant seed storage proteins showed changes in storage proteins, principally in the phaseolin and lectin fractions. We found many proteins that are recognized as drought stress-responsive proteins, and several of them are predicted to be intrinsically related to abiotic stress. The shotgun analysis searched against UniProt's legume database, and Gene Ontology (GO) analysis indicated that most of the seed proteins were cytosolic, with catalytic activity and associated with carbohydrate metabolism. The protein‒protein interaction networks from functional enrichment analysis showed that phytohemagglutinin interacts with proteins associated with the degradation of storage proteins in the cotyledons of common bean during germination. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that Tepary bean seed proteins provide valuable information with the potential to be used in genetic improvement and are part of the drought stress response, making our approach a potentially useful strategy for discovering novel drought-responsive proteins in other plant models.
